Watercolour Workbook: Detail and Reviews

Review from Leisure Painter Magazine - October 2005

Stopham Bridge

by Ray Campbell-Smith

"...Watercolour Techniques Workbook is aimed at the less experienced painter and is filled with down-to-earth and practical advice.

Bob begins the book by giving sound advice on materials and equipment, and then gets down to such matters as mixing watercolour paints and using watercolour washes of varying strengths.

Bob's book is concerned with landscape painting and he deals with his subject under three main headings: Skies, Trees and Foliage, and Water, to which he devotes about ten pages apiece. There is a final section on the all-important matter of shadows and this is twice as long, at twenty pages.

The text is in simple and direct language, with a complete absence of the sort of arty-crafty expressions that mar some books on art, and it is accompanied by a generous selection of Bob's own pleasing and attractive paintings. I particularly liked the slightly atmospheric rendering of Stopham Bridge and the moody impression of Chichester Canal."
